Born in the beautiful town of Telavi, Georgia in 1976, Levan Tozashvili started painting at the age of 8 under the tutelage of his aunt, the well-known Georgian painter Rusudan Tozashvili, a 2 time laureate and a winner of the People’s Artist of the Soviet Union 1982.

As a child, Levan would take the bus every summer to Tbilisi to visit his aunt, who encouraged him to draw, paint and study Georgian art.  As well as being a painter, Rusudan was also a colourist at the Georgian State Animation Studios.  Visits to the large studio were frequent and Levan would sit and copy the animation cells of classic Georgian animators that hung on the walls.

Under the combined influences of these animators and, most importantly, the colourful paintings of his aunt, Levan developed his unique technique for graphic pen and ink on watercolour.

He continued studying art (in particular wood carving) at the Georgian State Art College and graduated in 1999 top of his class. Then, in 2002, he continued his studies in English and graduated with a BA in English from The Georgian State University of Foreign Languages and Culture. This desire to bridge cultures brought him to London to study English and further his own artwork.

His exhibitions in Georgia include:

  • The Museum of National Culture, Telavi, June 1993
  • The International Centre of Art, Tbilisi, February 2001
  • Georgian State Gallery, Tbilisi, March 2001

In 2006, he also mounted a major exhibition at the Georgian Embassy in London where his art was displayed for well over a year and several of his paintings were purchased for private collections. At the request of the Ambassador, Levan painted the Crest of Georgia, which is in use on all correspondence and official documents issuing from the Georgian Embassy.

Levan’s work is in private collections in London, Paris, and USA.
